{"id":4052,"date":"2022-03-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/teambuildingasia.netagedev.co.za\/resources\/how-to-reduce-the-risk-of-your-employees-burning-out\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T17:46:51","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T17:46:51","slug":"how-to-reduce-the-risk-of-your-employees-burning-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.teambuildingasia.com\/resources\/how-to-reduce-the-risk-of-your-employees-burning-out","title":{"rendered":"How to reduce the risk of your employees burning out"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content\">\n<p>As of January, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a> officially classifies burnout as a \u201csyndrome\u201d rather than a phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>Burnout is defined as occupational inefficacy combined with feelings of hopelessness, energy depletion or exhaustion due to chronic workplace stress that hasn\u2019t been successfully managed, resulting in increased mental distance from one\u2019s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one\u2019s job.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"\/problems\/remote-teams\">telework<\/a>, burnout has become more prominent. Though it\u2019s a common misconception that burnout is the result of an overwhelming workload, burnout can result from inequality, feeling taken for granted, not rewarded or out of control. And let\u2019s be real, it is quite common to experience these feelings.<\/p>\n<p>Several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrmorning.com\/articles\/are-employees-mental-health-issues-costing-your-firm-millions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> suggest that when burnout is left unaddressed, it is expensive in terms of short-term productivity, employee retention and long-term health care costs.<\/p>\n<p>So, what can you do as an organisation to avoid the risk of your employees burning out? Here\u2019s what we have found:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Trust your staff<\/li>\n<li>Include your employees in large-scale decision making<\/li>\n<li>Include them in the review of their job requirements<\/li>\n<li>Cross-train employees<\/li>\n<li>Offer rewards (not necessarily monetary)<\/li>\n<li>Ensure your team members take the time off they are entitled to<\/li>\n<li>Watch carefully for signs of burnout<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In a remote setting, it can be difficult to address these topics.
